Unlike my previous two entries in my "Dreams of Home" series (One & Two), this one, rather strangely and fittingly, appeared to me in a dream. This dream that I would've nearly forgotten had I not drawn a terrible note on my phone, featured this exact design in the form of a 2x3" gold-backed pin, which I eagerly purchased to put on the back of my backpack. In the depths of my (still current) art block, I spent an afternoon polishing off this design to feature its playful structure and dimension. Maybe one day I'll produce this abstract design into a glossy merchandisable format.
What was a bit of an admittedly thoughtless exercise of a series suddenly had new, complex ideas leap out of the ether and into my head. I have some rather strong opinions on the whole Fruitiger Aero aesthetic revival as of late; it seems to follow behind that same old wave of kistchy surface-level vaporwave Instagram-popular nostalgia bait that has now left a hole where the most generic synthwave track you've ever heard once occupied. You know the ones. I suppose "playing things on Cool Math Games in a 240p Windows XP setup while listening to Linkin Park off Limewire" is the "new 80's pop anime VHS-filter pink-and-yellow vibes." Despite that, this odd design has me pondering: why is it that my brain managed to conjure up search bars in my subconcious thoughts? Are these symbols of the modern internet, things so easily written off as "the standard of life," - a search bar! - now engrained into my neurological pattern so as to become essential to my unconcious reality, even in a grotesque pattern such as this? A bit pretentious, maybe, especially for a simple design. If anything, I guess this is my recommendation to play Hypnospace Outlaw.
